THE 9 PLANT-CARE TIPS TO CARING FOR SUCCULENTS (AND NOT KILLING THEM)

Your succulents need plenty of light
Succulents love light and need six to eight hours of sun a day, depending on the type. If you plant succulents under direct sun, they will scorch, so introduce them slowly to full sun or provide shade with a sheer curtain.

Rotate Succulents Frequently
Your succulent may enjoy direct sunlight, but if it's sitting in the same spot day after day, only one side will be receiving enough light. Langton and Ray recommend rotating the plants frequently. In order to help succulents stand straight, rotating them will help them lean towards the sun. (Leaning may also be a sign that they need more sunlight.)

Water According to the Season
Succulents require extra energy when they're in a growth phase. It is in the spring and summer when plants are thriving and consuming much more water than they are when they are resting in the fall and winter. If you see that the top 125 inches of soil are dry, get your watering can. It is very important to let the soil dry between waterings so that you don't kill your succulent.

Water the Soil Directly
Whenever you water your succulents, make sure the soil is completely saturated. Please use succulent plant names if your container does not have drainage holes. Using a spray bottle to water your succulents may lead to brittle roots and moldy leaves. Also, you can place pots in a pan of water and allow the water to drain through the drainage hole. Having moistened the surface of the soil, remove it from the pan.

Keep Succulents Clean
As your indoor plants grow, they will unavoidably collect dust on their surfaces, which inhibits their growth, write Langton and Ray. Use a damp cloth to wipe off the leaves and spines (use a soft paintbrush to reach harder-to-reach areas).

Choose a Container with Drainage
Succulents dislike waterlogged soil, so drainage is necessary to prevent rot. jade plant turning red should have a drainage hole to allow excess water to drain. Pots made of Terra-cotta are ideal for beginners.

Proper Soil for Succulents
Flow-through soil is needed for succulents, so regular yard soil won't do. Cactus soil or potting soil mixed with sand, pumice, or perlite are best. When repotting a succulent, be gentle because the roots are fragile.

Get Rid of Bugs
Indoor succulents should not be attacked by pests, but some bugs can occasionally be encountered. In soil that is too wet and does not have adequate drainage, gnats are attracted to succulents. Use isopropyl alcohol 70 percent to eliminate eggs and larvae from the soil. Mealybugs are another pest that afflicts succulent owners. Overwatering and overfertilizing are likely to cause mealybugs. Spray infected succulents with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol and remove them from other succulents.

Fertilize Succulents in the Summer
You can feed succulents lightly in the spring and summer, but they don't require much fertilizer. Overfertilizing your succulent can cause it to grow too rapidly and become weak.
