If That Doesn't Fit Your Bill

Quick note: To use mods while playing with friends, you will need to create a server or use LAN. "Minecraft Realms", however, doesn't support mods.

How to make your Minecraft: Java Edition server or join a friend’s server

Servers are the foundation of "Minecraft's” multiplayer mode. Anyone playing together will need to be on the same server.

There are thousands of Minecraft servers out there that you and your friends could join to play together. To learn how to join either a friend's or public server, see the section below. There is one downside to this: you will be sharing these servers alongside many other people you don’t know.

If just you and your friends want to have a private game, you can create a Minecraft server for free. It's not easy and requires a lot of work. The server creator will also need a good computer and an internet connection. If that doesn't fit your bill, check out one of the other options.

These are the steps that you will need to follow in order to either join an already-running "Minecraft Java Edition" server or create your own multiplayer servers.

How to join the server of a friend in 'Minecraft Java Edition.' Or a public one

If you wish to join a server that a friend made or one you found online, there are thousands of public Minecraft servers. All you need is the correct IP address. While joining a public server will allow you to play multiplayer Minecraft, it will require sharing the server and any other players who have access to the server.

These public servers are also not yours to customize, as they were created and maintained by someone else. They probably won't work with most mods you use.

There are many servers to choose from, so there is a good chance that you will find one that suits your needs.

Once you have the IP Address of the public server that you desire or your friend's Minecraft server:

1. Select "Multiplayer" from the menu.

2. Click "Add server."

3. Enter the address of the host server in the "Server Address" field and click "Done." This could be an IP address or a URL.

4. Wait for the server's connection to occur. Then, select the server from the list and click "Join Server."

This is how you connect with a pre-existing server. Here's how you can create your own server.

How to create your 'Minecraft Java' server

Important: The steps below describe how to set up a server on a Windows 10 PC. The steps for Linux and Mac computers should be the same.

1. First, make sure Java has been installed on your computer. Java is available for free download from the Java website. Java SE Development Kit is also required for Mac users.

2. Launch a web browser of your choice and navigate to minecraft.net/download. Scroll down to click "Java Edition Server."

3. Next, find and download Minecraft server software. Put it somewhere you'll find it. The file will be named.jar.

4. Create a new folder on the computer. Give it a name and place the.jar file. This is where you'll keep all your server files.

5. Next, create a plain text file. Right-click the folder and select "New," followed by "Text Document." Name the text document "start.txt."

Quick note: Using the TextEdit application on a Mac, it is possible to create a.txt text document. You can use "cat" in Linux to open the terminal.

6. Navigate back to the Minecraft server download webpage. Copy the command text, which reads:

Note that the numbers near the end will differ based on the most current version of "Minecraft."

7. Paste the string of command text into your start.txt document.

8. Within the string of command text, you'll see the words "minecraft_server.1.16.5.jar." You'll need to rename that portion of the text "server.jar." The new line of code will now read as follows:

9. This line of code allows you to change the RAM allocation on your server. The more RAM you provide, the faster your server will run and the less stress it will put on your computer.

The RAM is determined by the first two numbers in the line of code, which are amounts of RAM in megabytes (MB). It defaults to 1024MB RAM or one gigabyte, (GB).

A server with five or more players should have at least 2GB RAM. This can be set by changing the code to

In most computer programming situations, one gigabyte equals 1,024 Megabytes. Emma Witman/Insider

10. Click File, then "Save As..." and where you can select "Save as type" from a drop-down menu, select "All Files (*. You can name the file "start.bat"

11. Delete "start.txt".

12. Double-click the "start.bat” file to open it. A black command prompt window will appear. It will close automatically after the.bat file has been completed.

13. You'll see some new items in the server folder, including a "eula.txt" document, short for "End User License Agreement." Open the document. Change the line of text that says "eula=false” so it reads "eula=true."

14. Run the start.bat file. The wait will be longer than before, as your server's world is being generated this time.

Technically, your server is ready to fire up now, and you'll also see a few new files in your server folder, including the "server.properties" file where you can customize your game.

Your server is currently accessible only to devices connected to the same internet as you. You'll have to set up port forwarding to open up your Minecraft server to users outside your local network.

There's a few different ways to set up port forwarding, and instructions you'll need specific to your router can be found here. Once you've set it up, give your friends your IP address, and they'll be able to join.

In the meantime, however, here's how you can start exploring your new server.

How to join your own Minecraft server, using the computer running the server

1. Launch Minecraft while your server is open and running, and select "Multiplayer." 2. Select "Add Server", in the bottom right corner. Simply enter the number "0" under the "Server Address" section.

You can access your server at any time.

How to use a LAN server to play "Minecraft" with people on the same internet connection

This is great if you want to play with siblings, roommates or just friends at the house. LAN servers are also known as local multiplayer server. They allow you to play with anyone connected to the same WiFi or Ethernet network.

Here's how we launch and join local multiplayer games:

1. One of the players should launch a solo game world and enter the pause menu, where they'll select "Open to LAN."

2. In the menu that opens, select the game mode and whether to allow cheats, then click The "Start LAN World."

3. The menu will close and the player will see a five-digit port number. Mark this number down. If it has disappeared, press T to open a chat box and locate it again.

4. The other player, or players, on the same network, should launch their Java-based game. But, instead of jumping into a different world, click "Multiplayer" from the main menu.

5. "Minecraft", which is a program that scans for games on the local network, will automatically begin scanning. When the world appears, click "Join Server".

6. If it doesn't find the server, the players should click "Direct Connection." Under "Server Address", enter the IP address of your server. A colon (:), followed by five-digit port number, is required.

This is an example of what it might look.

7. Click "Join Server."

How to use a premade multiplayer server with 'Minecraft Realms'

Many Minecraft players are focused on mods.

If non-modded Minecraft is too much or you don't want to create a server, you can opt for "Minecraft Realms."

Realms is a service where Mojang, the company that makes "Minecraft", will build and provide a server. You don't have to make it or run it, which is great if you don't have the time, computer speed, or bandwidth to keep it constantly active.

Here's how to use Realms.

Sign up for Minecraft Realms

1. Open the Minecraft Launcher app, and log into your Mojang or Microsoft account if you haven't already. Click play to launch Minecraft: Java Edition. Once the main menu loads, select "Minecraft Realms".

Open the "Realms Menu." Emma Witman/Insider

2. If you haven't used one already, there'll be an option for a free Realms trial. If you do not wish to subscribe, click "Subscribe". You'll be taken to a Realms signup form. Use it to create an account and subscription. MY BLOG Even if you are signing up for the one-month trial, make sure you have your payment information.

Create a server in Realms

1.

Once you have registered for Realms, close Java and relaunch Java. Then, click "Minecraft Realms", and then select "Java Realms" again from the main menu. Click anywhere on this screen to customize your first Realm.

2. Give your Realm a name, and add a description if you'd like, then click "Create."

3. Set your world type and structure generation preferences, and enter a "seed" if you want to recreate a world layout you're familiar with. Click "Create realm" to finalize.

Inviting other players to your 'Realms' server

Depending on whether you have a free trial subscription or the higher-tier Realms subscriptions, you will be able to create a realm that is accessible to two or more players. Here are some ways to invite friends to your realm.

1. Open Minecraft from the launcher. Click "Minecraft Realms” in the main menu.

2. To access the realm configuration screen, click the wrench icon located to the right side of your realm name.

3. Select "Players" on the top-left of the "Configure an realm" screen.

4. Enter the Microsoft and Mojang gamertag of the player you wish to invite, then tap "Invite player."

You just need to wait for the player accept the invitation. Once they do, they'll be notified in the main menu.

You can also grant operators status to invited players. This gives them access to certain commands within the game. Operators cannot invite or remove players.
