I have been working on setting up a Minecraft server for a couple of days now, and I cannot find a way to get my friends outside of my network to connect. I am certain I gave them the correct IP address. I tried many solutions without success. I can, however, connect to the server from other computers connected to the same router, but I think that only works when I have it set to "cracked" mode.

I tried disabling both my router and host firewalls, using a different host computer as my server host, and changing my port. All the solutions I tried sent the same message to my friends: Cannot reach server" when I was able connect. Here is some potentially useful information:

Host computer

Minecraft Server: -Version: 1.0.0 (jar)

Router: -Type: Wired/Wireless -Brand: Cisco -Model: Linksys E2000 -IP Address: 192.168.1.1 -Router Information: Firmware Version: 1.0.01 build 7Apr 15, 2010 Firmware Verification: 5447e765c2287b134ec7028c3b7c9ceb Current Time: Fri, 06 Jan 2012 18:44:02 Internet MAC Address: 98:FC:11:719:CB -Internet Connection: Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP Internet IP Address: 64.6.115.194 Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0 Default Gateway: 64.6.112.1 DNS1: 8.8.8.8 DNS2: 8.8.4.4 DNS3: 216.147.229.12 MTU: 1500 DHCP Lease Time: 4 Hour

If there is any other information you need, please tell me.

You will need to forward certain ports (router settings), and then open an incoming port in the firewall (OS settings). This is the place to start.

- - #3

no luck

I tried that. It didn't work.

What error did you get? Is minecraft equipped with a manual for hosting servers? If so, does it specify which port it uses to host the server? Forward the correct port to the correct server's LAN IP. You should also ensure that there are no firewalls blocking this port.

- - #5

It says "Cannot access server" on the computer of my friend.

Most ISPs provide dynamic WAN IP. Always check your WAN IP as it may change. They may also need the port whem to connect like 64.6.115.194.12345.

I found the problem(s).

I got it to work...actually...quite a while ago. It was too late to post it.

However, I gave my friend an external IP address to connect to. I used my home network's internal IP address to connect to computers in my home network. On top of that, I set my router's port forwarding settings and forwarded port 25565 to my internal IP (Server IP).

I'm sure many of you said it before, but I didn't understand it enough.

Thank you!

Doesn't your external IP address constantly change? Is that not a reason to give your friend the external IP address every time they want to play? What happens if your IP address changes? Is there something I am missing about dynamic IPs

Your ISP owns a range of IP addresses. When a user connects to the internet an IP is assigned to them which will expire at certain date/time, the expiry date/time will be extended if the user is still connected. The IP that the user has previously used will remain available to another user once he disconnects.

Your host computer's ip address should be entered in the dmz section of the router (Applications & Gaming > DMZ). Check if it works (list the routing table). If it works, set up Advanced Routing > Setup to assign the computer a static IP address. It's a 192.168.1.100 IP address. I don't know how to read your manual so I can't help any more. Put the router dmzs for your friend's computers. You might also need to disable your router firewall. Good luck.

Although there are many posters, I believe you can find the ip address in the routing table of the router. I believe it is in Setup> Advanced Routing. Or, keep it simple. The whole thing can be done without a router.

Go to whatismyipaddress.com this will show you your external IP used this IP to let anyone over the internet to connect to your server. You need to assign static LAN IP to your mincecraft server (OS settings), forward the ports used by your minecraft server (router settings), you need to open the firewall ports used by minecraft server game (OS settings).

user --> internet --> port:1234 WAN IP, ROUTER-->port1234LAN IP, minecraft server any data that goes through port 1234 (internet facing) will be forwarded to port 1234 of your minecraft server.

Please read the previous posts.

Okay, here's how you do it:

-Open any web browser on your network and type "what my IP address" There will appear four strings of numbers, which vary in length and are separated with dots. If not, you can try a different search provider. This is your external IP address. This information should be shared with your server members. Next, open Command Prompt. The first string is your internal IP Address. Use this for connecting your "game" computer to the server, as well as any other computers connected directly to your router. This up can change so you'll need to keep checking it. You can also edit the saved server name (only for computers connected directly to the router). -Now is the tricky part. Go to your internet browser and enter your external IP into the address bar, and hit Enter. If your router can be configured through an internet browser, the router setup page should pop up. Take a screenshot of the page and post it on this thread. I will guide you from there.

NOTE: If you are still having trouble allowing your friends to connect, just let me know. However, you can try to let your friends connect at this point, but I don't know that it will work; It didn't for me.

Please read the entire instruction manual.

lebalen replied: Hello, I did everything you said here but it doesn't help! help me please!! Click to expand...

I instructed you to upload a picture of the router settings. Enter the external IP address in your browser's address box and let me know what you see. If nothing appears, it could be that your router is not compatible with port forwarding. When you arrive at the page press [Print Screen] on the keyboard. Then, use any image editor to copy the screenshot into an image, save it, and then post it on the thread. Simple.

If you don't understand my instructions or can't read the text, send me your Skype or Yahoo username. I can walk you through the process using Skype or Yahoo! Messenger.

Hey, guys. I have had the exact same problem in the past. I haven't been able to connect to any Minecraft servers for about a month. I had a list of at least ten servers and they all said, "Can't Connect to Server."

My brother and I made our own server just a few days before this happened. He port-forwarded and everything. I was connected to it for the first few days. After that, I couldn’t connect again, unless he was using his laptop. I don’t know if this has any connection to what is happening, but I thought it would be worth mentioning. I can still connect if I use his computer and his only laptop. He cannot also connect with any other servers.

I can't think any reason we couldn't connect.
YOURBESTBET

I know he had port-forwarding issues, but we were able, for a few days, to connect to other servers. Then everything went black. I would be grateful if you could help me with this!

This is not all. We got a new router at the exact time our problems started. I don't see why this would have changed anything, but maybe there's something I'll need to fix with this router? Let me know, please.

@Seanic

1: Talk to your internet provider to see if there are any problems there

2: For the other servers that you tried to connect to, make sure you have the right IP address, and include a port number if required. The port number is not necessary if it is 25565. This is the default Minecraft port. Example: IP address: 12.3.4.56 Port number: 25566 IP address including port: 12.3.4.56:25566

3: If you are still having problems, post your server IP address on the forums so I can see if I have any problems. I will also need to know the time it will be on. So, create a time range and post it. Don't worry. It will only send me a signal if it is possible. I will not do anything other than what is allowed.

Though I am not a professional, I can still be of great help, because I have dealt with setting up a Minecraft server, and most of the problems comming from the laptop that runs it.

I'll try to set up a day that I can turn on the server, but that might not happen for a while.

But I thought I'd let you guys know that I am able to connect to one server, aside from the one that we host. It's the only one that shows up as online and the only one I can connect to.

Keep in mind, however, that not all public servers can be accessed 24/7. Even servers listed as 24/7 aren’t always available. There are factors such as server maintenance, power outages and crashes that can affect these servers. It could be that you are unable to connect to them.

ITS Simple I had the same problem #1 download Simple Port Forwarding #2 you have to Allow something in the Start Page but I don't remember what it was. It was related to Java or The Jar. You can unlock your Internet Router for them or give them their Internet Router Password to join. If they still have trouble joining, you can get a Cheap Internet Rounter Antena. This is how mine worked.

I have one question for everyone. I created a Normal server that my friends can connect to. But I can't connect to it. I made a Bukkit Server, but I can join it. However, my friends can't. Everything is the same as the Normal server. Do I have to port anything else? ?

Your internal IP address could have changed. Go to the server computer and click Start. Click My Network Places. Double-click on the internet connection it's using. The dialog box will open. Click on the Support tab if the server is Windows XP. It should give you the IP address. Once you are done, update the port forwarding settings so that the new IP is forward. Note: I am not sure which tab Windows Vista and Windows 7 has the IP address displayed, but I can assure you that it is in that dialog box.

If you try to access your router using a browser by entering an external IP address into your address bar, it will not take you to the router settings page. You cannot access the settings page via a web browser. In this case, compatible software will be required to access the settings. It doesn't have a settings page, so you will need to use another method to forward port-forwarding to the server.

Note: I have a Linksys E2000 wireless/wired router, and it does support port-forwarding, so you could base your choice around that (if you do choose to get a new router, of course).
