Jason Momoa Signs On To Star In Warner Bros.' Minecraft Movie


Warner Bros. is getting back into business with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star Jason Momoa, bringing him in for their long-gestating Minecraft movie.



According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor aged 42 has signed on for an undisclosed role in the videogame adaptation.



Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), has also joined the project to direct, which indicates that the project is finally moving forward after almost a decade of development.

Unspecified: According to The Hollywood Reporter the actor, aged 42, has signed on for an undisclosed role in the videogame adaptation.



The Minecraft videogame debuted in 2011 and was developed by Mojang Studios by Markus Persson, a Swedish designer of games.



The unconventional game doesn't have any particular goals, though it allows users to create worlds through blocks as they try to survive in the worlds they create.

The game became an immediate sensation, with over 100 million users signing up in the first few years that lead to Microsoft's whopping $2.5 billion acquisition of Mojang in 2014.



First game: The Minecraft video game debuted in 2011, created by Swedish game designer Markus Persson and developed by Mojang Studios



There have been a few spin-offs including Minecraft: Story Mode with Telltale Studios (2014), Minecraft Earth in 2019 & Minecraft Dungeons in 2020.



A few producers and filmmakers expressed interest shortly after the release. However, Mojang's CEO Carl Manneh stated in an interview that they would only engage with them 'if the right ideas come along'



Creator Persson said that Mojang was in talks to Warner Bros. to make a Minecraft movie. Shawn Levy (Free Guy), who was the first to be attached, will direct the film from a script written by Jason Fuchs.

Rob McElhenney, the star and co-creator of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, joined the team to direct in 2015. Steve Carell was attached to the star role.



Although production started early in 2016, it was stopped by Greg Silverman, then-Warner Bros. CEO, who was replaced by Toby Emmerich.



According to reports Emmerich was pursuing a 'different vision for the movie', McElhenney resigned in 2018.



Vision: Reports claimed Emmerich had a "different vision" for the film. McElhenney quit the project in 2018.



Aaron and Adam Nee, from The Lost City, came aboard to replace McElhenney (and Fuchs) in 2018. In 2019, Peter Sollett took their place. i love The studio set a release date of March 4, 2022.



That incarnation never got off the ground as the project was shelved due to COVID-19, though now it seems the studio is ready to move forward again with Minecraft, though no details were given about the story or Momoa's character.



Mary Parent and Roy Lee (Dune) will produce, with Jill Messick also receiving a posthumous producing credit for her work on the film before her passing in 2018.
