How To Make An Animated Discord Server Icon

Discord, an invite-only group chat platform, brings communities together to talk via video, voice, and text. A single user can join as many as 100 servers. Therefore, a distinct icon is necessary to make your account stand out.

Perform a quick search for servers and you'll see the creativity owners put into their icons. Common icons that members recognize include a funny meme, an anime character, and emote. Below are some examples I found on popular servers.

An animated icon is a great option if you are looking for something more eye-catching. It takes a few steps before you can upload an animated icon. I'll walk you through each one in this tutorial.

How to Unlock Animated Icons

Your server will require level one perks in order to use animated icons. You can achieve this by getting two boosts. Upgrade to Discord Nitro to get your first boost. Click the settings icon near your profile picture to locate Discord Nitro. After signing up, you automatically get two boosts you can apply to your server.

The second option is possible even without Nitro and with your community's help. Reach out to other members with boots to help level up the server. Once the server has reached level one, you can upload an animated icon.

How to Make an Animated Discord Server Icon

This tutorial is about making a GIF out of a video. But, you can upload your own GIF. Before we begin, consider how you want your server to be perceived. Is it fun and relaxed? Does it reflect a brand? It should make a good first impression on your server.

Step One: Open the Discord Server Icon Template

Kapwing provided a template measuring 512 x512 to help me create an icon that is perfectly sized. Kapwing is a free photo and video editor you can use in your browser to complete this tutorial. To get started, click the blue "make it!" button below.

Step 2: Upload a video

Click "upload" to import a video from your computer or paste a video URL, then delete any placeholder images. I'm using a short video from YouTube, but you can paste a link from TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and more.

Try to find a video where the main content is in the center. Discord server icons are cropped into circles so the edges are cut off. Drag the blue anchor points to resize your video so it fits the background.

Step Three: Cut Out a Section

Scan your video to find the perfect section for a GIF, then use the split tool to cut it out. Delete what's left and drag the ends of the clip so the length is a few seconds.

Audio will be removed when the GIF is exported, but there are two ways to remove it beforehand. You can lower the volume of the right-side studio or right click on the video to select "detach Audio" and then delete the layer.

Step Four: Export and Download

Click the dropdown next to "export video", then click "export GIF." Click "download" to save your server icon.

Step Five: Upload your Discord Account

Right click the server icon and click "server options" to upload the image. Click "upload" to add the GIF, and then click the green button "save changes". Discord animated server icons are limited to 10.24MB in maximum size. You can watch the animation by hovering over the icon with the mouse!
