The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, is opened as part a 42-kilometer cycle route that is a loop around the capital.

The tunnel is a link between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance within Refaim Park. נווה פריצקי Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.


Inauguration of the tunnel that is 2.1 kilometers long was held in Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion and Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) as well as a plethora of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction because of its rich history. Elkin stated that the current tourist industry is a part of Jerusalem's historic treasures and also incorporates modern tourism. "The inauguration [of] this tunnel project is another milestone in the advancement of Jerusalem as an attractive tourist destination for all types of tourists in Israel as well as around the world."

Elkin who, along with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that the ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year to develop all aspects of Jerusalem's tourism and in the creation of new attractions and ventures that connect the glorious historical past of our capital city to its future... נווה פריצקי I would like to invite cyclists to enjoy a safe and modernized route that will take the cyclist through Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality, and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the project.

Elkin explained that the proposed tunnel is connected with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will join existing bike trails. The tunnel will also be paved in its different areas. It will also encourage cycling and promote green transportation in the capital.

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to move the main sewer line toward Sorek's purification plant.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, installation of blowers and advanced security and electrical systems to ensure the tunnel is safe for pedestrians to travel through all year round.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to unique recreation locations, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the biblical aquarium and zoo , as well the historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban, and Ein Haniyeh.
