Neve ParitzkiJerusalem inaugurates Israel's first cycling tunnel. The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique adventure in hiking and riding that is to be enjoyed by everyone.
The Kerem Tunnel is the first cycle tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was officially opened in the year 2000 as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around the capital.

The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The tunnel's southern entrance is located in Refaim Park below Ein Laban. The northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem about half an hour away from the Kerem junction.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists attended a ceremony to inaugurate the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.

Jerusalem was once a very popular tourist destination because of its rich history. נווה פריצקי Elkin stated that, in addition to its historic treasures, modern tourism is also included in Jerusalem's city. "The opening (of [this] tunnel project is a further step in the development of Jerusalem and its transformation into a desirable tourist city for all sorts of visitors in Israel as well as around the world."

Elkin's ministry, which was also in charge of the project together with Jerusalem Municipality, declared that his ministry "invests hundreds and millions of shekels each year throughout Jerusalem's tourism, and also in the creation of innovative attractions and ventures, that link the amazing historical past of our eternal capital and its future." I invite all cyclists to come and take a ride along the new, well-maintained and modern route which overlooks Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.

Elkin stressed, "The Kerem Tunnel project is a key instrument for realizing our vision to change the way transportation is conducted in Jerusalem." Elkin explained that the proposed tunnel will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will join existing bike paths. The tunnel will also be paved throughout its various neighborhoods. This will increase cycling and encourage green transportation in the capital.

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move an important sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel which includes the fifth waterline that runs to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.

Current works include road construction, installation blowers and advanced safety systems to ensure that the tunnel is safe for all to use throughout the year.
